K-drama: Cinderella sister brief summary
It has been a Looooong while I know. Been tied up with a lot of things like renovation, moving, shopping for new stuff etc. Finally am looking forward to moving into my new place soon!
Meanwhile, I finally started on Cinderella Sister. I had put it as my watch list months back but I put it off since its like some tragic plot... Once I got started, I just had to keep going because the complexity of all the human dynamics and inner turmoil was pretty irresistable...
The story started with this 18yr old girl Eunjo scrambling to making breakfast for her "brother" while her mum was fighting with a man. To save her mum from being half beaten to death by the man she is cohabiting with, EJ dragged her mum out of the house and made a run for it with the hidden proposal ring intended for her mum (which EJ had stolen to stop her mum from turning back)
EJ had grown up witnessing her mum changing countless man to try to secure a stable living but only to be disappointed each time. Thus EJ learned to be strong and independent and emotionless on the surface (but she is really a sesnsitive person). While running away from her mum's man, EJ's path crossed with HyoSun.
Trying to get the ring back from HS, EJ's mum went to HS's school and thus realised HS is from a well to do family, and that her dad the owner of a local rice wine brewery is a widower. Seein the attachment of HS to her due to her missing her mum, EJ's mum schemed and pretended to shower love and attention to HS, plotting to stay. HS's father was on one hand smitten with her mum, and the other accepting that she can be the replacement mum for HS.
EJ was strongly against the arrangement to move into HS's house. She pleaded with her mum to leave with her to make a living on their own without depending on man anymore. However her mum refused and assursed her this will be the last time they have to make a run again.
From the start, HS was elated to have an elder sister, and did everything to try to please her. However, EJ remained cold and mean to HS, even being upfront that she hated HS (ater witnessing how her own mum ignore her and poured all her attention on HS). As each episode develops, I get the sense that apart from thinking HS has stolen her mum's affection, EJ kinda despised the way HS holds everyone's attention in her sunshine manner and how everyone indugle her when she fail in something. Contrast to EJ, HS never has to try hard at anything, and is a very happy girl. She is warm hearted by nature surrounded by people who love her, and trust has a very trusting and somewhat naive nature.
In her loneliness at her new environment, EJ gained a little trust and comfort from Kihoon, a uni guy who was putting up at HS's place as a temp worker. Kihoon sensing EJ's inner fragility and having a dark family secret of his own, started to bond with EJ through coaching her Math.
HS's father sense EJ's feeling of abandonment from her own mother, and her distrust in adult(men) and told her that she can trust him but to no avail. EJ remained distance though she appreciate the chance to go to school again.
Just when EJ begin to open up to KH, and falling for him, KH suddenly left without a word and she desperately went to the bus terminal to try to look for him when she learnt he had been enlisted for army. Unknown to her, KH had actually left her a letter pleading for her to say the word to retain him and he would stay. Unfortunately, HS had hidden the letter and thus for the next 8 years, EJ grew up thinking KH the guy had abandon her while KH thought EJ was cold hearted to not even bother with him.
After 8 years, EJ was helping HS's dad in his brewery and trying to research a more cheaper way to produce an even higher quality rice wine. Her relationship with HS however had deterioted badly. HS failed in her attempt in ballerina world and return to her dad's place. However, HS continues to feel that EJ was trying to steal everything away (KH, her dad and the brewery) from her and thus remained even more spiteful to EJ. She even lied to EJ that KH was her bf creating more misunderstanding.
Later, KH decided to return to HS's dad brewery. He wanted to renew the re;ationship with EJ but she turned him down flatly. Partly owning to his sudden departure and partly she knew HS likes him and that EJ felt she is indebted to the family. Later EJ found out about the letter that never reached her but she lied to EJ that she had seen it but clean forgotten about him. KH was hurt. Meanwhile, KH in the bid to stop his step brother from trying to buy overHS's compay, secretly agreed to his own father's plan to take over brewery. KH's idea was to gain control so that his step brother will lose in trying to gain control of the company. Unfortunately, he miscalcuated his own father devious nture and was betrayed, leading to the death of HS's father (when he thought KH had betrayed him). with the truth Unknown to HS, she laid the blame to EJ for making her father undergo a prvious heart surgery.
Meanwhile, EJ in her own way didnt want HS to remain so weak and whiny, refused to lend a shoulder for her to cry on, but maintain her cold posture and taunting that she will take everythin from HS. HS also discovered the fake pretence EJ's mum had put up all these years and felt even more alone. After continous taunting, HS was even more determined that EJ will not steal everything from her.
The story is at episode 10 now and my summary is thus incomplete as of now. I didnt do a thorough summary or detail explanation of each character because partly I dont have time, and partly it is way better if u catch the drama yourself. I feel sorry for EJ and her struggles and u have to admire her, though at times her unwillingness to depend on other is also her blind spot leading to tragedy....
I had a feeling that EJ may die in the end though i really hope not. I saw the music video and trailer and somehow EJ seemed to be outcast again, while HS was merrily clubbing with KH. I hate suspense!!! Ahhhhh! I really really want to know what happen
