Playful Kiss Episode 1 Review (or better put..thrashings)

Just finished the first episode of Playful Kiss and my verdict of episode 1 is that it stinks sky high. I couldnt believe HOW INCREDIBLY BORING the first 30mins was. The remaining mins were not any better, but just more in tune with the manga. On the whole, it was so nonsense, unoriginal, waste of time and film and repeat - boring.

To tear it down simply, they overdid the "romanticising" portion to a point it was irritating. How old do they think the TV audience tuning in are? 6years old? White horse, garden of eden, pony tails and elves? What the hell???!!! Give me a break. Secondly, I hate the amount of makeup they put on KHJ. Are they trying to turn him into a pretty GIRL?!!! He is fine as he is, we like him as a guy, not some bloody doll up Barbie-Ken version. Just stop decking him in tons of eyeshadow and lip gloss for heaven sake. It's showing up soooo badly on Tv. Plus the script of him correctin the love letter is sooooooo WAY OUT OF CONTEXT. A bright guy as brillant as him, and looking at everyone else with disdain will never ever bother to take the time to read the letter. He will most prob dump it into the trash in real life. So what will trigger him to read the letter? It's so out of character. Plus, the main character is sort of antisocial but he is not mean nor arrogantly obnoxious, so the manga character will never humiliate Oh Hani so publicly with her bad results either. He may say it to her in private but not in front of the student body and teacher. Which is why I am still in favor of the Taiwanese version where he just cast the letter aside and not bother with it till later when he actually develop feelings for the girl. Everything the korean version has done just borders on disbelief and illogical.

Thirdly, during the vending machine scene and classroom scene, I felt as if I was watching a bad remake of Goong (Princess Hours). The rolling down of the leggings, the bunch of not so bright art student gathering together, the sterotyping of fat people = daughter of some pork shop. And I was even more horrified to see the ending with the bears. it IS EXACTLY the same as Princess Hours as I had earlier suspected. Where is the fresh ideas? Why are the shadows of a previous successful drama sneaking in all over? Why must it be piggy pack on something else? Doesnt the director has anymore new tricks up his sleeves? It really grinds my nerves to see how a very good manga got remake into such a lousy first episode. It's almost shameful to say.

I am hoping hope against hope that the following epsiodes will be better and only episode one is a MAJOR LET DOWN. I think it is grossly unfair that the heat is on KHJ now to carry the show, rather than a good script. I couldnt shake off the feeling that the Taiwanese script is way way much better and more realistic just for the starting episode. I was hoping Korean version could come up with something matching or better but I am fairly disappointed by what I have seen today.

I know I sound very critical and dismayal but because I am since this is such a highly anticipated drama by many. How can they ruin it so badly for the premier airing? If they cannot do a better job than the Taiwanese version which was done rather well, then they should leave the manga alone and attempt something else if all they want to do is copy the "quality" and "vision" of Goong. Plus I am harsh because I would hate it when someone ruin my manga for me. Dont adapt the manga if you cannot stick to the story development. There is no white horse in there stupid, and no one at that age still dreams of prince charming as a white horse in general.

All said and ranted, I am still rooting for KHJ. If the drama dropped its viewer rating, I can only blame it on the productor, the script writers. I think the cast are trying their best to protray what was dish out to them....

I am crossing my fingers for better sequel episodes but hey, at least I know I have one less drama weighing on my mind as I wander around Scandinavia next 2 weeks.

was laughing so hard reading your rants..practically echoing everything I was thinking. really, didn't notice the make-up was reading "Changes" during the daydream episodes. And when KHJ did finally speak (which is in the middle of the drama), was harsh that I was so surprised. I guess he is the only one who can chew mean words and not look physically obnoxious. But despite its obvious lack of good script, I am not willing to put it aside and continue to watch for my greedy eyes. (Nimy most probably is enjoying your rants the most...am shallow, hehehehe) There is Butcher's book to lean on when the script doesn't take.

hmmmm...I thought you left already. Just fixed my air tickets in Delta using my mileage for my Chicago trip end of October but not so excited since its work and not vacation. Only fools like me would go to the windy city on November...must find my thermals.

Glad you watched before you left so that you wouldn't feel that you missed anything. Although Zhong Wu Yan is enjoyable lately. Will check out the SScandal and try My GF again. Need my fix.

Take care.

My thoughts exactly! I skipped the first minutes of this epidode since i hated the fantasy scene.. judging from the first 2 eps, I'm saying i like the taiwanese version better. It gives off a more realistic feeling. I love the way Goong played with the stuffed bears at the end and seeing this again is pleasant but unoriginal. It does parallel Goong too much. I hope the episodes get better though, so there's something to watch while waiting for ISWAK3. I heard rumors of taiwanese ver. already filming for it? I truly hope its true

Hi Guys, I haven't done this in a really long time(I mean Comment section) but Playful Kiss finally got me , which I thought would happen with Gumiho ! (I love Hong Sisters ) I am by birth a Contrarian , so that should explain why I have started liking a drama that has no great love from anyone . I am quite familiar with the story having skimmed through ISWAK and Itazura na Kiss .Even then , I found the plot dumb .I was just looking for ' kisses' to see if I have to relearn new stuff (insert self depreciating laugh :)) When Korean version was announced ,I knew it would be young and fast but was 1003% sure that it would be a disaster with Kim Hyun Joong because the BOY cannot ACT .I mean I love KHJ from WGM but he was awful in BOF , so my love for him was what I felt for an annoying but really close relative ,one who know you for who you are and accepts it but who annoys the heck out of you now(now I am going off tangent :)). I watched the first episode and honestly I was not annoyed .Goong comparisons –so what ! I never had enough of Goong when I watched it :P Joo Ji Hoon and Kim Hyung Joong have very strong but totally different charisma .Jung So Min was comapred to YEH from the moment she starred in Bad Guy (I didnt like her character in BG ,which I dropped after 3 eps ) but she has quite a range and is a star in making ! .But then KHJ started to ‘act’ and man ,suddenly I started noticing how pretty he was and REST IS HISTORY .I cannot resist pretty –straight boys who are good at stuff (be it acting ,studying or at their job) because they grow up to be handsome ajushhis hehe . So,Ladies and Gentlemen (do boys watch dramas (I dont know anyone who likes dramas hehe),In conclusion ,this Contrarian put forth that Playful Kiss is watchable and quite delicious :)^^~~~

I watched ep 3 and 4 a day after they aired. PK team in vikii are very efficient! *thank you thank you*

I have to say this series is getting better :) I dont know if their acting is getting better or maybe because KHJ is smiling more often these past few eps. *teehee*

There is a ISWAK3 viikii channel pending since they havnt really confirmed it..

Enjoy your lingonberry jam, meatballs (and those other things they eat) in Scandinavia! ^_^

I just finished the whole series and I love it. Jung So Min did great as Oh Ha Ni. To be honest, her acting is the saving grace. In terms of giddiness.. I would say that, even it has no torrid kisses as ISWAK, my heart melts every time BSJ smile. This is so popular now in whole ASIA. Congratulations to KHJ and JSM! Asians and Latin Americans got hooked to PK and the couple.
